I guess this is kind of a stereotype – all women pack too many items when they go away. Well in my experience it is not just women. We all tend to carry with us more than we need. I was never a person with tons of suitcases but I always would bring home from my journeys several garments I never wore. I guess I just wanted to be prepared for all that might come along. I guess being in control would be the proper word. And than the trip to Malaysia came last year. Different to the others, it was not pre-planned by me. No books read, no itinerary done, no “must-sees” detected. We just booked the tickets and the hotel for the first two nights. And two days before take-off my husband introduces the excellent idea of taking just our back-packs.

When you decide to carry not roll your stuff it is easier to pack, I tell you. So all together I packed 11 kg of clothes, toiletries, books etc. OK, and some 5 kg of carry-on.

It felt great. And guess what – I still took stuff with me, that I did not need. So I just left it there.

Since than I take try to make the travels kind of a game. I have been traveling a lot for 3-4 days this year with the budget airlines. They really are strict about the extra luggage. So now I manage to come by with 8-10 kg of luggage.

It is a game of letting go of control, simplicity and confidence.

Control – I wanted to be prepared for all sorts of events, all sorts of “what ifs” would be answered while packing. Now I just pack for what I know and improvise on the “what ifs” when they come. And they really do not come that often.

Simplicity – simple, washable, matching clothes are the best choice. I stills struggle a bit with the shoes, but even here I bought just a pair this year.

Confidence – yup, I am not always dressed properly for any occasion, but I am learning to wear my confidence as a garment. I bet it looks stunning.

So do travel light thorough life. Get rid off the extra baggage. Simplify with confidence and share some of the control! Life is easier and more fun!
